On the 23th of June, while we were sitting with some friends in the bar that became my second house (let me introduce : the Captain Kangaroo), by a stroke of luck, we also were at the concert of a Japanese rock band : Frying Dutchman.

Before telling you more about this concert, you need to know that Japanese pronunciation is syllabic and some sounds simply don't exist (like the French R we love so much... at least I do). As it is very close to Flying Dutchman, we had an important debate about a possible transcription mistake from English to Japanese (in Katakana : フライングダッチマン, literally fu ra i n gu da-tchi ma n, the Japanese R is closer to our L so both Flying and Frying have the same writing in Japanese), which is very common here (but I'll talk about that later). Anyway, we had to end this debate so we asked the band about that, and what they told us forced us to admit that Japanese also can play with words... (oh, mean joke)

But let's get back to the story of this unexpected concert! We arrived in the bar during the happy hour (for the ignorants, this is when drinks are cheap, it only concerns alcoholic drinks of course), so around 6 pm, and in the usual atmosphere of the bar, we realized that there was a concert at 10. The band settled quietly where they could find some space, and they were talking with everyone around. As the "crowd" was getting interested about the band, we came closer when they really started to play, after a short improvisation that they probably didn't even played themselves (no I wasn't drunk but it's kind of far)...

At first, I didn't really liked their music, the first song wasn't very special, an ordinary rock song not so inspired. But after this and a boring ballad, my ears got a good dressing-down, they played for real, for my enjoyment (not only mine)! They were really energetic, wild, and their music was lively, built on the length, the kind of construction I love. Actually this was my first concert in Japan, and it changed completely the idea I had that no link is possible between the band and the audience, however much the band is popular. I always thought that, and after the concert, when they sat with us to eat and talk, it was strange to me. But they were really funny and kind, Camille talked with them in a new language and we had a lot of fun (it was on this day that Amandine almost died laughing). They left late, and one hour later, I went home with David, leaving the others ending their night in the bar.

Three months later, they came again to the Captain Kangaroo for a new concert. This time we were prepared, we told everybody to come a little early to make sure we could sit, but now we know so many people that it was impossible to get enough space. When I arrived (later than everybody, there was another concert I wanted to see with Remi, yes we're soooooo overloaded...) our group was occupying a third of the bar and was waiting for the concert to stard. The Frying Dutchman were already there, and already really drunk, so we wondered if they would be able to play the full concert. But alcohol don't seem to bother musicians because they settled and the concert started. Once again, they were wild, maybe more than ever because of the high level of alcohol in their blood that the Captain's owner was trying to raise, generously getting them drunk with a bottle of Tequila while they were playing. The singer was really "tired", he ended the concert lying on the floor singing, as for the guitarist and the drummer, they kept playing, with even more energy, and the bassist was imperturbable. The concert was quite short but they played some songs we didn't knew, that will probably be on their new album (probably the third, I think the two others were made at their own expense), and they rocked!

The next concert will be on the 24th of December, and of course I'll be there with Amandine so she can enjoy this before leaving. We look like fans but it's so great to be at so good concerts that we'd be fools not to be there... I don't have any video of the band yet, maybe during the next concert, but you can enjoy pictures and music (should I say that their songs are much better live?)
